Early Childhood (Preschool) Curriculum

We learn that we are children of God, created in His image, uniquely gifted and part of a loving community. We have daily religion, visit the Adoration Chapel, attend Mass and experience Catechist of the Good Shepherd.  We learn simple prayers, participate in service activities and read stories from the Bible. 

Strengthening a child's fine motor muscles will enable them to correctly and confidently turn pages of books they read, tie their own shoes and write their own stories.  We provide numerous opportunities for children to use scissors,  playdoh, glue and a variety of writing instruments.  We encourage movement in the classroom, offer opportunities for outdoor play.

Much of our time in Preschool is spent teaching and talking about good school behaviors. By doing so, our children enter Kindergarten adapted to the school environment and ready to learn.  We teach them how to "look like a learner". This includes listening, paying attention and following directions. We are progressing from parallel play to cooperative play so we spend a lot of time discussion and modeling sharing, cooperation, negotiation and compromise.

We attend all school "Specials" including Spanish, Art, Library, PE and Music.  We encourage creativity throughout the day.

We learn all of our uppercase and lowercase letters and focus on letter identification as well as letter sounds. We work with children individually to help them master the correct  formation of the letter. We model reading concepts to include reading left to right, top to bottom, and return sweep. We discuss authors and illustrators. We use empowering language - You are a reader!  You are a writer!  The mathematical learning builds on the curiosity and enthusiasm of children and grows naturally from their experiences.  We make patterns, count, graph, sort and classify. We use objects and manipulatives to explore mathematical concepts. Students begin to understand and recognize numbers.
