Second Grade Curriculum

Second Grade Mission Statement

Second grade is an exciting time as children embark upon new adventures in the world of learning and faith. Through two sacraments, students grow closer to Christ. This is a year of important transitions, as well as one in which acquisition of new skills is accelerated. We hope to instill a love of learning that will last throughout your child’s years of schooling and beyond.

In second grade we use the Reader’s Workshop program. Students are assessed at the beginning of the year and end of each quarter. We are able to use those assessments to meet the needs of each learner. Specific grade level skills will be introduced at the beginning of the week and then practiced and assessed. Skills are reviewed throughout the year.

In mathematics students use a hands-on modeling approach, work on problem solving skills, and build on prior knowledge to continue their academic growth. They focus on addition and subtraction concepts, place value, money, time, length, and data analysis.

In spelling we are able to meet the needs of all students through an individualized spelling program. At the beginning of every week students are pretested on a particular spelling pattern. Teachers use the results of the pretest to determine student word lists that are appropriate, but challenging for each learner.
