Fifth Grade Curriculum

Fifth Grade Mission Statement

As educators our mission is to foster an environment of active faith engagement, academic growth, and personal responsibility as our students transition to the middle school model of education at St. Clement of Rome School.  We are committed to the process of educating our students both academically and spiritually as they focus on becoming independent learners and develop a deeper understanding and participation in our faith.  Together, we will work diligently to create opportunities for our students to actively participate in the development of their personal academic strengths and challenges, as well as facilitating skills for growth in the areas of organization, study skills, and personal academic responsibility.
Religion Subject Icon
The religion curriculum for 5th grade is a study of the Sacraments of the Church. Through project-based learning and research, students actively participate in their faith formation. Daily prayer, virtue lessons, and class meetings also contribute to student growth in faith and their love for one another.
Reading/Writing Subject Icon
Our new Reading and Writing Workshop has been highly successful. As co-teachers, Mrs. Harkins and Mrs. Zach have created an interactive cross-curricular reading program that students love. We use whole group, small group, and one-on-one instruction to teach reading comprehension through a variety of fiction and non-fiction texts.
English Subject Icon
Fifth grade English focuses on the application of grammar within fun and engaging writing projects. Each writing unit is paired with grammar concepts and art projects for an immersive, hands on learning experience. English also incorporates multiple subject areas, including reading and writing workshop, which gives the students a multidisciplinary view of learning
Social Studies
The social studies curriculum is an exploration of early American history. The class is a project-based learning structure that provides the opportunity for students to engage in collaborative activities and the development of reading comprehension skills as applied to historical research. The class structure and pace provides the ability to learn by student-led inquiry, whole and small group activities, as well as the development of independent skills in organization, study techniques, and time management.
Science Subject Icon
The fifth grade science curriculum explores interactions of major earth systems, structure and properties of matter, and the solar system through the use of online interactive labs as well as hands on experiments. Students learn to work collaboratively through the use of the scientific method to explore these concepts.
Math Subject Icon
The math curriculum uses scaffolded instruction and hands-on activities to allow students to explore new concepts and extend their knowledge. Concepts are reinforced through the use of whole class, small group, and one-on-one instruction. Students are given the chance to display their knowledge by engaging in problem based learning and creating class presentations.
