Sixth Grade Curriculum

Sixth Grade Mission Statement

As educators in sixth grade, we continue to foster an environment of active faith engagement,  academic growth, and personal responsibility in their educational journey at St. Clement of Rome School.  To continue growing their relationship with God, we practice service, worship, and read the Word of God.  To continue their academic growth, we cultivate personal responsibility through varied learning techniques, organizational strategies, and collaborative opportunities. Our goal is to provide them with the tools to successfully continue their Middle School journey, both academically and spiritually.

In 6th grade religion, the year begins with students receiving their own Bible which leads to our study of the Old Testament. Our fostering of service is encouraged through receiving Kindergarten Buddies where together they work on service projects. We grow closer in our relationship with God through Mass, Adoration, journaling, and morning class prayer.

In 6th grade literature, we will be using a workshop model to experience a variety of stories and novels covering such genres as non-fiction, historical and realistic fiction, and fantasy. We will develop our vocabulary through our readings and Words of the Day, and utilize IXL and ReadWorks to practice skills. Projects, writings, discussion, and presentations will be some of the assessments used throughout the year.

6th grade English focuses on the application and development of grammar concepts through writing.  This holistic approach emphasizes cross-curricular papers, projects, and presentations with authentic audiences to make the study of the English language relevant, meaningful, and purposeful to the learner. Vocabulary is built through the study of Greek and Latin roots.

The social studies curriculum is an exploration of World History, Civics and an overview of Geography. The class is a project-based learning structure that provides the opportunity for students to engage in collaborative activities and the continued development of historical thinking. The structure of the class includes time for collaboration, work on organizational skills, small group activities, presentations, diving into primary and secondary sources, and inquiry based learning. We end the year with a Culture Project as a summation of our learning.

6th Earth and Space Science is the exploration of what Earth is made of and how it has changed over the many years. This includes weathering and erosion, weather and climate, and natural resources.
